DREADMOOR Money and Trading: How to Earn Coins

How to earn coins in DREADMOOR: which fish to sell, what the traders buy, why dangerous catches pay more, and what you should never sell.

Last Updated: 2026-10-30

Quick answer: Sell fish at Betsy & Sons, keep chromatic scales and metal for crafting, and target predatory fish when you need a big payout. The fastest early coins come from a full Snapper hold; the best long-term value comes from dangerous species and trader contracts.

Demo build

Coin prices in the demo are small and may be rebalanced for Early Access. The principles — dangerous fish pay more, materials are worth more than their sale price — should hold.

DREADMOOR's economy is deliberately tight. You are not a merchant prince; you are a stranded angler with a debt, as the free demo makes clear in its first hour. Coins matter because they buy information, carburettor parts and the occasional shortcut.

Where coins come from

  • Selling fish to Gil and Boza at Betsy & Sons.
  • Selling surplus materials you do not need for upgrades.
  • Trader contracts posted at the store.
  • Predatory fish carcasses, which are worth more than common catch.
  • Quest rewards from John and the store.

The store is the hub. Gil handles the business; Boza handles the fish. Talk to both, because their dialogue and stock differ.

Which fish to sell

Sell common Snapper once you have the recipes you need. Keep Softgazer until you have enough chromatic scales for the Rainbow Fin, then sell the surplus.

Fish Sell or keep Reason
Snapper Sell most Common, easy to replace
Softgazer Keep until scales are stocked Chromatic scales are a crafting gate
Shovel Nose Sell surplus Useful but not a bottleneck
Sharp Fin Sell Common predator bait target
Sturdy Crawler Sell surplus Low value, bulky
Harpooner Keep 3, sell the rest Three carcasses buy the carburettor

A full hold of Snapper is the reliable early income. A single Harpooner can be worth several Snapper, but the fight costs bait and time. Mix both: grind Snapper when you need steady coins, hunt predators when you need a specific trade.

Dangerous prey pays more

The store is explicit: the more dangerous the prey, the higher the price. That is the game's risk-reward loop.

Predatory fish require a different technique. You cast past the splash zone, hold the mouse button and retrieve slowly with small tugs. Too fast and the fish cannot catch up; too long a pause and it loses interest. The fishing guide covers the timing.

The payoff is not only coins. Predator carcasses are quest items, and the Harpooner trade is the cheapest route to the Upgraded Engine.

What not to sell

Metal plates. Every boat module needs scrap. Selling metal for a few coins is a bad trade.

Coral fibre. It regrows, but slowly. Keep a stack for hull repairs.

Adhesive slime. Annoying to farm and needed for repairs.

Chromatic scales. The Rainbow Fin and later recipes need them.

Iron barrels. Heavy, but required for the still and other crafts.

If you are short on coins, sell fish, not materials. Fish are renewable within minutes; coral is renewable within days.

Contracts and the debt

Betsy & Sons posts contracts. They are a reliable source of coins and sometimes materials. Check the board every time you dock.

The story also gives you a debt to the store after the essence injection. Do not ignore it. Paying it down keeps the traders friendly and unlocks stock.

The demo does not let the debt spiral, but Early Access may be harsher. Dream Dock describes a divided world where resources are scarce and trust is fragile, so treat the debt as a priority until it is cleared.

Fuel economy

Fish meat is boat fuel. Feeding the fuel larva converts meat into fuel, which means every fish has two possible uses: sale or range.

Do not burn your entire hold for fuel. Keep enough fish to sell, and keep enough fuel to reach the next dock. A good split is half the hold for sale, half for fuel, adjusted by how far you plan to travel.

The boat upgrades page explains when a fuel tank or canister rack is worth the scrap.

The Baron and Sludgebet

The demo ends before Sludgebet, but the story sets up the Baron as the biggest dealer in the region. Expect better prices, rarer stock and less friendly terms.

For now, the trading post is enough. Build your coin reserve before the gates open; the first trip beyond the Throat will likely cost more than you expect.
