DREADMOOR The Throat: Gate Puzzle Walkthrough

How to open the Throat gate in DREADMOOR: start the generator, repair the water wheels, solve the flow control panel and finish the demo.

Last Updated: 2026-10-30

Quick answer: The Throat is the demo's final area. Start the generator, repair the buckets and thermal coil, then use the control panel to split water between both wheels. When both turn, the gate opens and you can sail out.

Demo build

The Throat is the end of demo v0.3.39. The puzzle may be expanded in Early Access.

The Throat is the demo's best puzzle and its thematic climax, and it is worth playing through the free demo just for this section. Two enormous water wheels hold back the route to the deep water, and the machinery that turns them has been abandoned for years.

Before you go

The Throat run is longer than the tutorial. Bring:

  • Fuel — refuel before you leave the trading post.
  • Hull protection — at least one plate.
  • Repair materials — bug slime and metal.
  • Food/healing — the area has hazards.
  • A free save — save before the control panel.

If you are still on the Standard Engine, the trip will take a while. The Upgraded Engine is worth installing first. The boat upgrades page explains the order.

Step 1: Start the generator

The generator is inside the gate complex. Interact with it and follow the prompts.

If it will not start:

  • Check the fuel can nearby.
  • Check the control panel for a missing power route.
  • Look for the thermal coil; it may need repair first.

The generator powers the control panel. Without it, the panel is dead.

Step 2: Repair the wheels

Each water wheel has buckets that catch the flow. The demo requires you to repair damaged buckets before the wheels can turn.

Look for the repair points on the wheel structure. You need metal and bug slime. The repair tool must be loaded before it works.

The thermal coil is a separate repair. It regulates the machinery and must be fixed before the gate accepts the flow.

Repair order

Generator → thermal coil → buckets → control panel. If you skip a step, the panel will not accept your input.

Step 3: Solve the control panel

The control panel routes water between the two wheels. It behaves like a small flow puzzle: each input redirects part of the stream.

The goal is simple: both wheels must turn at the same time. If one wheel stops, the gate stays shut.

How to approach it:

  1. Look at the panel's flow diagram.
  2. Identify which input feeds which wheel.
  3. Route water to the dry wheel first.
  4. Balance the flow so neither wheel stalls.
  5. Confirm the gate opens.

The demo's panel is forgiving. If you get stuck, reset the inputs and start from the wheel that is not moving.

Step 4: Open the gate

When both wheels turn, the gate mechanism engages. Return to the boat and sail through.

The quest updates to "SET OUT! Board the motorboat and leave the Slough." That is the demo's final objective.

Do not forget to loot the keeper's shed before you leave. It contains supplies and lore.

Keeper Lilo

Lilo is the Throat's keeper. She has been waiting for someone to take over, and when you arrive she leaves on a giant turtle.

Her dialogue is the demo's quietest moment. It also confirms that the world beyond the gate is worse, not better, which fits Dream Dock's stated approach to tension.

You cannot recruit her or bring her with you. She is a narrative device, not a companion.

Hazards

  • Spitting coral — projectiles; keep moving.
  • Blight fog — damage over time; do not linger.
  • Deep water — instant death on foot.
  • Tentacles — night boat attacks; travel by day if possible.

The Throat area has more verticality than the starting marsh. Watch your footing; a fall into water is fatal.

Common problems

The generator will not start. You missed the fuel can or the thermal coil repair.

The panel is unresponsive. The generator is off or the buckets are still broken.

One wheel will not turn. Route more flow to it; the panel's inputs are unbalanced.

The gate will not open. Both wheels must be turning at the same time.

I cannot find the thermal coil. It is part of the gate machinery, not the wheel itself. Look for the glowing repair point.

What happens after the gate?

The demo ends. You get a completion screen and a teaser of the drowned world.

Sludgebet, the Baron and the deep water are set up for Early Access. There is no post-credits gameplay in the demo.

The story ending page explains what the finale sets up. The locations page places the Throat in the region.
