DREADMOOR Steam Deck: Playable but Not Verified

DREADMOOR is playable on Steam Deck but not Verified. What that means for controls, performance and the settings to change before you sail.

Last Updated: 2026-10-30

Quick answer: DREADMOOR is playable on Steam Deck but not Steam Deck Verified. The demo runs, the game has full controller support, and the UI is readable on the 1280×800 screen. Expect to lower foliage, fog and shadows, cap the frame rate at 30 or 40, and accept that settlements are the heaviest scenes.

Status at demo launch

Valve's compatibility rating at the October demo release was "Playable", not "Verified". Dream Dock has not announced a separate Deck optimisation pass for 9 November.

"Playable" is a specific label in Valve's compatibility programme, not a vibe. It means the game runs, but one or more Verified criteria are unmet: default controller bindings may need adjustment, text may be small, or performance may not hold. "Verified" means the game boots, runs at a stable frame rate, has readable text, works with the default gamepad layout and shows no compatibility warnings.

DREADMOOR sits in the first bucket. The important question is whether the fishing minigame feels right on a handheld, and that depends on how you map the tension controls.

"Full controller support" — DREADMOOR on Steam

Does DREADMOOR run on Steam Deck?

Yes. The demo installs and runs on the Deck, and the main game uses the same engine and assets. The 60GB install is the practical constraint: the 64GB Deck model cannot hold the game alongside much else, and a microSD card will be slower.

The game is not Deck Verified, so Valve has not guaranteed the default experience. That is a warning about polish, not proof that it is unplayable. If you already own a Deck, test the free demo before buying.

The control problem

DREADMOOR's fishing minigame asks you to hold the right mouse button and alternate A/D to keep the rod in the green centre, then pull against the fish. On a controller, those inputs map to triggers and sticks, but the precision is different. The game supports full controller input, so the bindings exist; they may not match the mouse-and-keyboard feel.

The demo also uses the keyboard for quick slots and the workbench. On Deck, the on-screen keyboard and radial menus work, but they slow down inventory management. If you plan to play docked with a controller, test the fishing before you commit to a full run.

Start with the demo, not the purchase

The DREADMOOR Demo is free and uses the same control layer. If the tension minigame feels wrong on the Deck, the full game will too.

Settings to change first

There is no official Deck preset. A sensible starting point:

Setting Start at Why
Resolution 1280×800 Native panel resolution
Frame rate cap 30 or 40 Stable beats variable in a fishing game
Foliage / vegetation Low Heaviest CPU and GPU cost
Fog / volumetric quality Medium or low Large fill-rate cost on the Deck
Shadows Low Little visual loss at 800p
Motion blur Off Helps with the swaying boat camera
TDP 10–12W Longer battery, more stable clocks

The game has a 60fps cap option in the demo settings. On Deck, 40fps is the better target if your unit can hold it; 30fps is fine for a slow boat game.

Performance expectations

The demo's heaviest moments are the trading post and the Throat, where water, fog and many props are on screen. Open water is lighter. Expect the frame rate to dip when docking, not when fighting a fish.

Do not judge the port by the first launch. Shader compilation takes several minutes and the opening area streams assets while the game is still setting up. Give it one full session before deciding.

For the desktop comparison, the system requirements page lists the GTX 1060 6GB minimum. The Deck's GPU is in that ballpark with lower memory bandwidth, which is why settings matter more than the label.

Is DREADMOOR Verified on Deck?

No. Valve's rating is Playable. A game can stay Playable indefinitely, and developers sometimes patch their way to Verified after launch. Dream Dock has not said whether it will pursue verification.

If Verified status matters to you, wait. If you are comfortable tweaking settings, the demo is the honest test. The controls page lists the default bindings and the fishing-specific inputs.

Docked vs handheld

Docked at 1080p, the Deck behaves like a low-end desktop and will need lower settings than handheld 800p. Handheld is the better experience because the UI scales to the smaller screen and the frame rate target is lower.

The game's text is not tiny, but the workbench and blueprint menus are dense. Handheld play benefits from the bigger UI scale options if the demo exposes them; if not, sit closer to the screen or play docked for crafting sessions.
